In the Eternal City, the Opus XII flats, housed in an early 20th century building just a few steps from the Colosseum, are the result of a dialogue between history and modernity. The first work taken was to restore the architectural character of the residence; the first step was to replace the old solid oak floors with new parquet floors, which reproduce the original design. The use of natural materials such as wood and local travertine marble, the colour study in relation to the external landscape, and the play of light and shadow have created a transcendental atmosphere for the project and complemented the marvellous architecture and ruins outside.

The flat had been derelict for many years and the relationship between spaces was very fragmented, with a long corridor serving different rooms that were interconnected and used like a maze. Adopting a distribution strategy more in tune with the lifestyle of the young clientele, a large open space including the kitchen and living room was recreated by cutting arches into the load-bearing masonry, with light coming into the space from different fronts.

The existing house is not particularly well loved. It is a blank canvas with no particular age or time within it - it has obviously been refurbished a few times before, but in a way that does not enhance the original tone of the house or pay homage to its history and heritage. All of the original heritage fabrics had been removed except for the stained glass windows in the bedrooms and entrance, which were thankfully still intact.

The firm wanted to restore the existing interior architecture and pay homage to the era of the house. They favoured warm, natural materials over man-made ones. At the same time, the hope was to create a home for Leah and Oliver that suited their current stage of life. This is because they both have a strong sense of home, which is reflected in the artwork, furniture and objects they have carefully selected.

Minimising the ecological footprint was a major concern for their client when Simon de Burbure designed this home. Every aspect, including the materials used, exudes nature. Lime plaster was used for the interior walls, ceilings and floors, adding an organic look and texture.

细木工板由橡木制成，天然石材的点缀使室内的单色调显得更加和谐。此外，房屋还采用了最高标准的生态技术。

The joinery is made of oak, and the accents of natural stone make the monochromatic tones of the interior appear more harmonious. In addition, the houses are equipped with the highest standards of ecological technology.
