Sixties Sea Side Transformation
Sixties Sea Side Transformation is a minimalist renovation located in Knokke, Belgium, designed by Stef Claes. Late 1960s domestic architecture rarely survives intact into the present without suffering the indignities of misguided updating – layers of renovation that strip away original character in pursuit of contemporary relevance. The transformation represents a more considered alternative: a transformation that treats the existing structure as a collaborator rather than a constraint. The home, originally built by an engineer, carries the decisive geometry typical of its era, a striking triangular form with an assertive presence that Claes chose to honor rather than override.

The project sits at an interesting intersection between restoration and renovation, a distinction that shaped every material and spatial decision. Rather than imposing a new identity onto the structure, the approach involved reading what was already there and responding to it with care. The central fireplace, a dominant organizational element, became the anchor around which the spatial flow was recalibrated – not through dramatic intervention, but through subtle adjustments that improved livability without disturbing the house’s fundamental logic.

Travertine and wood flooring were introduced as companions to the existing palette, selected for their capacity to feel simultaneously new and historically grounded. Travertine in particular carries a quality of accumulated time – its surface variations and warm, mineral tones resist the sterility of purely contemporary interventions. Paired with wood, the combination creates a material register that belongs to the house rather than commenting on it from a distance.
