Seventh House, a gallery converted from Frank Gehrys 1965 Danziger Studio and Residence, opened in Hollywood in 2021. Focusing on early 20th-century Art Deco, postmodernism, and contemporary design, the gallery seamlessly integrates its collection into every room of the residence, creating an immersive viewing experience. This unique approach fosters a dialogue between design eras, perfectly complementing Gehrys cubical design.

As an offshoot of Galerie Half, an antique gallery on Melrose Avenue, the Seventh House Gallery was commissioned by graphic designer Louis Danziger in 1965 for Frank Gehry to design and build. Danziger initially envisioned creating a composite building that combined both work and living functions. After being introduced through their mutual friend Fred Usar, Gehry further refined Danzigers concept, endowing different spaces with unique functions and values. Now transformed into a gallery, this space presents a modern interpretation that blends early modernism, designs from the 1980s - 1990s, and contemporary creations.

The Danziger Studio and Residence, hailed as a low-key masterpiece of early Gehry architecture, is located at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and North Orange Avenue. It consists of two staggered cubic forms with stucco facades. The building explores the integration of material aesthetics and sustainability, themes that continued to permeate Gehrys subsequent creative career. Its structure completely isolates the gallery from the bustling street outside, making it a serene design retreat in the urban jungle.
The buildings exterior features stucco, the second time Frank Gehry used this classic Los Angeles surface material in his career. Inside, the exposed 2x4-inch ceiling displays the building materials themselves as finishes, achieving a unity of practicality and aesthetics. The thickened double-column walls give the building a fortress-like structural strength. The unique skylights and high side windows introduce natural light into the interior, creating a sense of transparency and lightness. While ensuring privacy from the street, they create a sanctuary for work and rest completely insulated from the urban hubbub.

The gallery space continues the exhibition logic of the residences original layout, engaging in a profound dialogue with the architectural characteristics of Frank Gehry. This historic landmark not only retains the living functions of each room but also showcases works by modernist masters such as Maria Pergay, Enzo Mari, and Le Corbusier. These are complemented by contemporary creations from American designers Courtney Applebaum and Giancarlo Valle, while the sculptural bedroom furniture crafted by Green River Project LLC further enriches the spatial hierarchy.
